As the Scotsman Russel wrote so long ago, salmon really are a free gift of nature. They bring us the nutrient riches of the sea right to our dinner table in the most deliciously concentrated form imaginable.

Little wonder, then, that we have been eating away at them throughout our history here on planet earth. And little wonder also, that when compared to other sources of nature’s vital nutrients, we attribute so much value to them.
How much value? The current price for a Chinook salmon pulled from the waters of the Monterey Bay is $26 a pound on the dock! And we pay the price because we believe the salmon is worth it.
Given the value we the people attribute to salmon, you would think we would do our human best to husband the species to the best of our ability. But we don’t! Instead, we dam its rivers and pollute its waters to the extent that we wonder if the species can survive. And that leads us to ask…
